Magic of Jojoba Beard Oil: 4 Key Benefits You'll See

Alex Cutler

There’s a reason we called this article “the magic of jojoba beard oil.”

And it’s not because Gandalf was a fan of jojoba oil.

It’s because jojoba oil is as close as it gets to a magic elixir for your beard.

We’re serious. No matter what you’re struggling with – whether it’s a coarse beard, a dull beard, a dry beard, or an itchy beard – jojoba oil has got you covered.

Now that we’re thinking about it, maybe Gandalf did use jojoba oil… That would explain how his beard was so long and so healthy.

So, if you want a beard worthy of a wizard, you’ll want to know what jojoba oil is, what it does, the different types, and how to use it.

Now let’s get to the magic.

Jojoba Oil for Beards: Jojoba oil softens, moisturizes, and adds natural shine to beards while relieving itchiness and preventing beard dandruff.

Grades of Jojoba Oil: The best grade is 100% cold-pressed golden jojoba oil, known for its high vitamin E content, promoting healthy beard growth.

Promotes Beard Health: Jojoba oil’s emollient and humectant properties deeply hydrate hair follicles, making beards easier to manage and style.

Application Tips: Wash and dampen your beard before applying a few drops of jojoba oil, massaging it evenly throughout your facial hair.

Types of Jojoba Oil: Besides the best grade, winterized jojoba oil remains liquid in cold conditions, while bleached jojoba oil is suitable for lighter hair tones.

What is Jojoba Oil?

So what exactly is jojoba oil?

Good question.

Let’s start with where it comes from.

Jojoba oil is derived from the seeds of the jojoba plant (also called Simmondsia Chinensis) that’s found in Northern Mexico and parts of the Southwestern US.

Now, what is it?

Jojoba oil is an oil that’s popularly used in all-natural beard, hair, and skin care products. It’s well-known for its antioxidant and moisturizing properties, and it’s even classified as an emollient – or a product that softens the skin and prevents itching.

But, we’ll cover the benefits of jojoba oil in more detail below.

Benefits of Jojoba Oil for Beards

Since it’s used in a wide variety of skincare and hair care products, it must be special.

I mean, there’s a reason we called it a “magic elixir.”

Here are some jojoba oil benefits:

1. Softens Unruly Hair

The first thing you’ll notice once you start using jojoba oil is the new texture of your hair.

Because of its emollient properties, your hair will become softer and smoother. In turn, this makes it easier to manage and style.

If you’re struggling with a prickly, pokey, or just plain rough beard, you probably need some jojoba oil in your life.

Thankfully, we’ve got just the product for you: El Presidente. Learn more about this all-natural and high-quality beard care product here.

2. Promotes Natural Shine

You can tell a healthy beard based on its shine.

With that being said, you want your beard to have a nice reflective shimmer.

And guess what? Jojoba oil can do that for you.

Thanks to the added moisture and emollient properties, this natural oil will keep your beard's natural reflective surface.

If you don’t want to take our word for it, you don’t have to. A recent dermatological review came to these same conclusions.

3. Seals In Moisture

So, we know jojoba oil is an emollient… But what else is it?

Well, jojoba oil can be called a two-in-one, thanks to its humectant properties as well.

Now, what is a humectant, you ask…

Don’t worry, it’s pretty simple. A humectant is a moisturizing ingredient that takes hydration one step further. These ingredients, jojoba oil included, absorb moisture from the air and seal it into your hair follicles and skin.

The result? Your beard and skin will benefit from long-lasting hydration – which can promote new hair growth and healthy hair growth.

In short, humectants are the bomb. If you’re not using them in your beard, you’re missing out. Read about argan oil if you’re interested in another option.

4. Relieves Itchiness

Last, but certainly not least, jojoba oil can rid your beard of the biggest killer of beginner beards… itchiness.

That’s right. As you grow your beard, you start to run out of sebum – or naturally occurring skin oil that keeps your beard and skin moisturized. That leads to itching, flaking, and eventually beard dandruff – which can impact your beard growth.

Thankfully, that’s where jojoba oil comes in.

Jojoba oil will keep your beard moisturized, so any itching and flaking are kept to a minimum – even for those with sensitive skin.

Grades of Jojoba Oil for Beard

Something a lot of people don’t know about is the three different grades of jojoba oil.

But, we’re changing that.

Here are some key differences between the three:

100% Cold Pressed Golden Jojoba Oil

100% cold-pressed golden jojoba oil, also called pure organic jojoba oil, is what we recommend using for your beard.

Compared to other types of jojoba oil, cold-pressed jojoba oil is the highest quality available. That makes it have the highest concentration of vitamin E – which can promote healthy hair growth.

This grade of jojoba oil has a golden amber color and becomes a solid at temperatures below 50°F.

Winterized Jojoba Oil

Winterized jojoba oil is exactly what it sounds like.

It’s very similar to cold-pressed jojoba oil, except it’s diluted with a carrier oil so it won’t turn to a solid when exposed to colder conditioners.

While this is a good option if you live somewhere with extreme temperatures, it’s not pure jojoba oil and won’t provide the same high-quality results.

You can also use winterized jojoba oil to make a homemade beard oil that’s winter safe.

Bleached Jojoba Oil

The last type of jojoba oil is bleached.

Again, it’s exactly what it sounds like – jojoba oil that is white, as opposed to a darker amber color.

That being said, there’s ultimately no reason to use bleached jojoba oil compared to pure or winterized oil. However, some people believe that it’s better for those with light blonde hair.

How to Use Jojoba Beard Oil

A man applying oil to his beard

Now that you know all about jojoba oil itself, it’s time to learn how you can apply it to your beard.

Luckily for you, it’s a super straightforward and easy process.

Preparing Your Beard

Before lathering the oil directly on your skin, you’ll want to prepare your beard.

Think about it like you’re painting a table. You don’t just start layering the paint on, do you? Nope. You need to prime it first.

The same can be said about using jojoba oil on your beard.

Here’s how you should prepare your beard:

Step 1:  Start by washing your beard. We recommend using a beard wash (we like Beardbrand’s Utility Wash), but you can use warm water as well. Find more about washing your beard here.

Step 2: Next, you’ll want to dry your beard until it’s damp. For shorter beards, you can get away using a towel and patting your beard dry. If you have a longer beard, we recommend using a hair dryer on its lowest heat setting.

You should follow this pre-application process no matter what type of oil you’re using on your beard.

Speaking of other oil, we recommend using hemp oil as an alternative to jojoba oil.

Applying the Oil

Now it’s what you’ve been waiting for. It’s time to apply that jojoba oil.

To do so, start by putting four or five drops in-between your hands and rub them together. For a smaller beard, we recommend only using a few drops.

Then, all you need to do is massage the oil into your facial hair – ensuring you cover the entire beard from top to bottom.

You can also use a beard bush (like our best boar bristle brush) to evenly apply jojoba oil throughout your facial hair.
